On the back: "And in Edinburgh of all places. I mean, you never think of that sort of thing happening to Edinburgh, do you....?
That sort of thing....is the brutal abduction and murder of two young girls. And now a third is missing, presumably gone to the same sad end. Detective Sergeant John Rebus, smoking and drinking too much, his own young daughter spirtied away south by his disenchanged wife, is one of many policemen huting the killer. And then the messages begin to arrive: knotted string and matchstick crosses - taunting Rebus with pieces of a puzzle only he can solve.
I had picked up this book and tried to read it three times, the third time I did finish it. At first I thought that it did not keep my interest as I was bored in places, but since finishing the book and pondering over its content, it may not be a bad story after all. I think I would read his second book Hide and Seek first before I give my opinion of this series. He is very popular, so it is probably just not for me.
