Been to the Dentist today.....

Just had to go!  I have been "looking after" a large cavity in my tooth for two years.  Up until three years ago I paid an insurance for nearly 20 years for the Dentist to look after my teeth.  As the years went by, I found that I was not getting the treatment that I was paying for, my own fault I guess, but he could of told me he didn't want to do my teeth any longer, but he didn't.  So I left!

Unfortunately my search for another  Dentist was not showing results, everyone I visited would not take me on as I have "neglected my teeth".  Nooooooo.......what he should have said is that the Dentist neglected to do my teeth.

Then other fears developed, the Dentist would insist laying you flat or with your head so close to the floor and your feet up in the air, that no way can I relax in this position.

Injections, cannot bear them - never had them for years, and now the Dentists will not do a filling without them.

Then that cotton wool up against my tongue (can cope with in the cheek - at least I can't swallow that with my mouth shut).

Mirrors, drills, sunction all in your mouth together........Noooooo......and the metal bracket around the teeth, so the filling goes in the right place.....just too much to be thinking of.

Then there is the Xrays - how many can your body cope with?  Not to worry they say - you get more radiation from flying in an plane.  Why tell me that when I am planning to go overseas in the next year or so!

So I am panicking already and still hadn't found a Dentist.  Until last week - there on the internet - was a Dentist who will talk through your fear......over a cup of coffee.

I decided against the coffee I would just make an appointment for check up.  Having told the receptionist, that I fear Dentists.

On the day of my appointment,  I went into his surgery feeling brave....Ha Ha not really I was shaking.  Now he says what are your worries?  Why ask a silly question.....I am absolutely scared stiff of going to the Dentist!!!!  "Well don't worry we won't put any nasty instruments into your mouth today"

"Right we need an Xray".....now then, I am thinking how many Xrays have I had in my life time? -    my head, my chest, my abdomen,  several teeth Xrays over the years, my foot, my hands,  my neck, not forgetting my four trips on long haul flights to see family.....hey that is enough for one life time isn't it?

"Well if we don't take Xrays we can't do the filling"....Absolute blackmail.  So I had the Xray - one of those digital ones....closed my eyes all the way through.  "Well done" I hear them say.  Another Xray to add to my list....

Today was the big day for the filling!  Could not believe it, the bus was running late!  Why the Driver stops at a bus stop at beginning of journey to watch the world go by, only to be late at the other end....for my appointment.

I am there.....OK the injection. This won't hurt, it is called a Wand....puts the anaesthetic into the gum very slowly.  Done.  "right now we start to drill" .  OK so far....no no no, the shakes start, all over and suddenly my arm flies out and hits the drill and the Dentist manages to take it out of the mouth, in time - no damage thank goodness, but the shakes continue and I can't stop them.

"Thats it" he says, we can't continue, we will have to put in a temporary filling and you will have to make an appointment again and be sedated".  Noooooo.....I got to have it done today!  Just give me a few minutes to calm down, the tears now spilling from my eyes, but not actually crying......

I am ready I said....he still does not move....I said I am ready, I am calm.  Lets get on with the job.  "OK" he says "we will see how it goes".

Something very strange happened then, I fell into a sedate mode (no nothing was given to me), I somehow relaxed and I felt I wasn't even in the room.  Thirty minutes later, the work was completed.

Dentist says "all four (including his two nurses) of us need to be commended"......I said I think all three of you deserve a medal....and I, after I left the surgery, need a bank loan!  It was so so expensive....but at least the filling is done.
