Trip to Australia - Sydney by train

Tuesday, 19th November

Off to see P, you remember I met for the first time on Saturday and now laden with some old magazines.  These were magazines produced by the Sheep Station and my Mum's friend was the Editor and my Mum was the Printer and Ps Mum did some of the drawings on the covers. So a bit of nostalgia here.

I caught the early City Rail train which for $8.40 took me all the way to Turramurra in four hours.  I had to change trains at Sydney, but that wasn't difficult - except the train destination board had got it all wrong again, which caused a delay in getting on the right train.

I have a feeling the gentleman passenger I spoke to, and was very helpful, may have got on the wrong train!  I shall never know.

This was an experience for me as it is only the second time I crossed the Sydney Harbour Bridge by train (or third when I return).  My first time was many many years ago when I had an appointment at a North Sydney hospital.

So very exciting, even if I can only see from the window of the train.  But in the excitment I had got my camera in a tangle in the bag, and before long, we had crossed the bridge and it was too late!

Eventually I arrived and we both were kept busy going through the magazines and then the afternoon was over and it was soon bedtime.

Wednesday 20th November

Well I awoke very early the next morning - my body clock seems to think when you are retired you have to start the day earlier than if you were getting ready for work!

P had her friends round for a few games on her tennis court. that morning  It was great to watch and to meet new people.  Afterwards they were off to their usual lunch at the local cafe and offered me a lift there too.

Now I had so many offers I did not know who to choose and someone said who you going with.  Quick decision I said "I will go in the pink car - I like pink".  Well I don't really like pink, but the person driving it was very nice.  I had a lovely turkey, cranberry and cream cheese sandwich, it was delicious.

Then a pleasant walk back to Ps.

This is a nice road - it does remind me of home, but not as crowded as ours.  I hardly saw any cars.

The sun was warm so I sat in the garden and read a book.  A nice relaxing time.

During the evening I met with another group of friends of Ps.  Very entertaining evening of chat and laughter.

Thursday 21st November

Left early the next day, caught the City Rail to Central.

Now I am ready for the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Taken from inside the train, of course, we are approaching the Bridge.  I am very excited about this.

A little closer....

And a bit more....

Whooo.....we are on the Bridge!

Hadn't gone far then!

Soon we are in Sydney Central and I need to catch a connecting train.  The next City Rail was to leave at 4.00 p.m. and ideally I would have liked to walked down to the City, but my bag was heavy and I had not thought of finding a locker to put it in.

I had decided to catch the Canberra Express instead which was to leave in 90 mins, so I parked myself in a coffee shop until we could board the train.  This was a 3 hour journey back to Goulburn.

Now I am amazed how few people are on a busy station like Sydney.  Not saying that there are not many, but it isn't crowded like London.  You can at least move without being butted out of the way.

And Goulburn is a beautiful train station.

Where's the people you might ask.  There wasn't any on the other side.

Oh look - just one person

And the other way - nobody!  Actually I cheated here.  These weren't taken on this day.  But generally there are only a few people anyway,

Oh and the staff are great.  Friendly and helpful and they keep the station so neat and tidy.
