I haven't done a car boot for years - used to do one at this place every week for about 12 years selling just books - mostly non fiction. I gave that up about six years ago.
Today, I thought, I have all this junk accummulating that is of no earthly use to me. Yesterday, I picked up a roll of black dustbin bags, and a heap of carrier bags and did a tour of the house, sheds, garage and garden and filled the bags. Some was already in boxes ready to go somewhere but not to landfill, so gathered those up too.
Up bright and early - 4.30 a.m. for me to sit on the patio to watch the day break properly, watching the birds twittering away, and drinking a nice hot cup of tea. It was so peaceful and cool, I stayed there too long because no sooner it was early it was now reaching 6.00 a.m. and the gates to the bootsale would be opening now. Quick shower, dressed, gather my float, car keys and off I go.
I had instructions from other half, pick a shady spot, but when you swing into the field half an hour later, all those instructions are gone out of your mind, and I pulled in next to the hedge sideways where there was a little shade but by 8.00 a.m. it was beginning to get hot.
Who would buy this!! Some people if the price is right. Nothing sold much over a pound, but then I did want to get rid of it. I even gave away two piles of magazines and a chipped dish, and a broken broach.
By 10.00 a.m. I was cooking - 30 degrees heat - is not good - so I gathered one of son's cast of cotton tops from the pile on the ground and slung it round my neck - luckily I bought my hat.
Only a steady flow of people - oh I wish I wasn't on my own!! I would have had a field day looking at all these stalls, and spending the money I made on my own stuff.
Around 11.45 a.m. some were packing up, so I followed suit, with the idea when I was all packed up I could wander around the remaining stalls. The worse thing about being on your own, you can't answer a call of nature. So bottling that up and trying not to drink any more water, you kinda forget things.
What did I forget? Ah I forgot to wander round the stalls.....I hopped in the car and drove home. The first thing my husband said - "Did you buy anything??" I told the truth - "No". Who was surprised? He was!!!
Actually, despite the heat I enjoyed the whole atmosphere again.....and looking forward to another one in August. I am sure I could find plenty of things to sell.
Well done for not buying anything. when we did car boots not very often mind, the fun was trawling the other stalls. We haven't been to or had a stall at a boot sale for years. Maybe we should :)
